Supported Employment Success Story
By Jill Doyle
Common Grounds Wellness Center in Portland, Oregon has a mission of enhancing their community through all of their services, from their bath-house to their therapeutic and holistic medical and natural health options, but one of the best examples of this mission is through their support of ColumbiaCare’s Supported Employment program. They have counted on the reliable and high quality light cleaning services of a worker from Columbia Care in their clinic for over a year. Ann Stuck recently took over their cleaning and has been working for them for almost three months, and says she likes working because it gives her something to do. She also reports being very pleased that she can sell her hats in the crafts section of the wellness center. Since Common Grounds also has a strong commitment to using environmentally friendly cleaning products and maintaining a healing environment, they have become a model employer for our program. Ann has become a valuable and relied on employee for their 33rd Ave Clinic. The general manager of Common Grounds, Lydia Carrigan stated, “We have really enjoyed working with all of the good people at ColumbiaCare. Common Grounds Wellness Center has always been an organization that strives to include everyone who would like to be a part of our community. Welcoming Ann to our working community was a natural fit. Ann has been a great addition to our center, we are satisfied with the work she does and it has been a pleasure getting to know her”. Common Grounds accounts manager Rachelle says, "Ann has been a great addition to our team. She is dedicated to the job and goes the extra mile to make sure the place is clean and tidy. Ann has also joined other employees in offering their hand-made goods for sale in our small crafts market. She has made lovely crocheted hats and everyone is very impressed!"
